French cavalry short sabre with scabbard, 1880. Champagne opening sabre, sabrage or stencilling technique
A short, robust French cavalry sabre of 1880, complete with scabbard. Please note: the price is for the sabre without the double stand, the dedication and the Prosecco bottle appearing in some of the photos.... bottle of Prosecco.
The technique of sabrage, or opening a bottle of sparkling wine with a sabre, became fashionable after the French Revolution, when Napoleon's army was keen to visit chic raves in the homes of the aristocracy. Fortunately, the stencilling technique has survived to the present day, and each of us can choose this spectacular way and gloat with satisfaction after looking at the delighted faces of our guests.
Sabre handle capped with a brass three-barrelled hilt. Handle shank upholstered in black leather, visible notches filled with brass twisted wire so-called cutlass. The blade is made of high quality steel, securely rounded, with an engraved date of 1880. The scabbard is made of tin, with two riffles and movable spikes, finished with a spur-finger.
