The ship's guns on old sailing ships were mounted in the ambrazuras, or special gun ports. This was a very distinctive feature of the appearance of such a ship. Before firing, the barrel of the cannon was exposed through holes cut in the side, usually square. This method ensured that the shot did not smoke up the inside of the deck and set the side on fire, and that the blast accompanying the shot did not wreak havoc on the deck. After firing, the cannon retreated and was braked on special ropes.

The presented miniature is a replica of an 18th-century cannon used on British royal ships, manufactured by the Spanish company Denix.
The replica is partly made of wood (gun mount), partly of metal (barrel, wheel axles). The whole presents itself very solidly and faithfully reflects the specifics of this type of gun. The system of ropes and hooks - very well reproduced in the model - shows how a shot was fired from the deck of the ship while not causing it to self-destruct. The model also took care to show how the heavy barrel was attached to the wooden structure of the gun carriage, and a movable wooden wedge responsible for the position of the barrel was also incorporated. As we know from history and rich adventure literature, such a gun was also an indispensable tool of every self-respecting buccaneer. It is still worth taking a closer look at such a weapon today. You can never have too much knowledge!
