The division was formed in March 1943 on the basis of the 5th Vilnius DP and the 6th Lviv DP created in the USSR. Initially a two-brigade, at the end of the war expanded to include a third brigade. It was part of the 2nd Polish Corps. She fought at Sangro and Volturno. Through the Gustav Line (the battle of Monte Cassino) she went into battle on the Adriatic. Then she fought in the Loreto area, in the Emilian Apennines, and fought hard over Senio and Bologna, ending with its effective capture on April 21, 1945. After the end of hostilities, she remained in the occupation forces in Italy. In June 1946, she was transported to England, and from September 7, registration for the Polish Corps of Preparation and Arrangement began.
