Miniature of the saber Karabela SZ 003
Karabela is the eighteenth-century name of Polish saber of Turkish origin, which appeared in the territory of the Commonwealth in the sixteenth century. In the 17th century it was a combat saber, perfectly suited for arc cutting. It was characterized by a large curvature of the blade, usually tipped with a feather. The open handle with a wooden shaft made it possible to rest his thumb on it, while the head in the form of an eagle's bow provided support for the little finger. The handle constructed in such a way prevented the saber from slipping out of the hand. Karabela, as a decorative saber, began to appear during the reign of Jan III Sobieski. Then it also became a symbol of belonging to the nobility. The handles were decorated with semi-precious stones and ivory, while they mainly decorated inscriptions or allegorical scenes. Karabela is widely regarded as a synonym
