Miniature of Saber Batorówki SZ 001
€14.61
Hungarian - Polish saber is the oldest form of saber in Poland. Batorówka is one of its types. Her appearance is associated with the person of the prince of Transylvania, Stefan Batory, elected king of Poland in 1576, and wielding power until his death in 1586. This weapon was equipment of Polish cavalry and infantry. Effective in strong cutting, less in fencing. It was characterized by an open handle with an inclined shaft covered with leather, and a long guard. The broad and heavy blade with a very small curvature, usually ended with a double-edged feather. The shape of the handle suggests a reference to the medieval sword. Among the various Hungarian-Polish varieties, Borówka is distinguished apart from the handle by its blade ornamentation. It was often decorated with the inscription STEPHANUS BATOREUS REX POLONIAE. This combat saber had a great impact on the creators of later models of Polish sabers.
