In 1847, he published the Chess-Player's Handbook, the most famous of his series of chess books. In 1849, Staunton signed a set of chess pieces designed by Nathaniel Cook and produced by John Jaques. He recommended the pieces in his chess newspaper. Their shape has become the most popular pattern of chess pieces in the world, and is still used today in most chess tournaments.
